The Rocks in Bethlehem Named as New Hampshire Energy Champion

The renovation of the Carriage Barn at The Rocks received the NH Energy Week “Project of the Year: Energy Champion Award” for 2024 in May. The annual awards recognize and honor the individuals and entities that make exceptional contributions that champion for the Granite State’s energy future. More specifically, the Project of the Year award recognizes projects that exemplify what will be needed in a 21st century energy system.

The Community Development Finance Authority nominated The Forest Society, which received $300,000 in tax credits in 2023, as a result of its innovative and energy efficient approach to renovating the Carriage Barn at The Rocks in Bethlehem. The renovation retained the historic exterior of the building and converted the interior into a net-zero energy-efficient structure powered by geothermal and solar photovoltaic systems.

These systems bring the entire campus at The Rocks to net zero and minimize operating and maintenance costs while providing a comfortable work environment. In addition, the renovations result in an increase in functional space that will allow the organization to expand programs and services in the region. It serves as the centerpiece of a larger effort to create a multi-use destination at The Rocks that also includes recreational trails, a rustic outdoor amphitheater, and separate facilities to support its Christmas tree farm operation.
